ArtPatt started because free online pattern tools were either broken, stuffed with ads, or gated behind per-pattern fees. Crafters deserved something simple: upload a photo, get a printable chart with a color legend and yarn estimates, and move on to actually making the thing.
What the engine actually does
Behind the preview is a pattern-engine that handles pixelation, color clustering in perceptual (Lab) space, dithering, stitch-aspect correction, partial stitches, backstitch detection, and confetti reduction — the filter that removes isolated stitches so your fabric doesn't end up with dozens of one-stitch color changes.
Cross-stitch patterns are matched to the full DMC floss catalog (454 colors) using CIEDE2000 color distance, the same perceptual metric professional print work uses. If a hex is closer to 310 than 3799, that's what we'll give you.

Supported crafts
Crochet (SC, HDC, DC with stitch-ratio correction), cross-stitch, knitting (stockinette 1.3:1 ratio), blackwork, diamond painting, embroidery, macrame, and punch needle. Specialized generators cover tapestry crochet, mosaic crochet, C2C, graphghan, fair isle, and intarsia.
