Crochet Pattern
The only free generator that compensates for stitch aspect ratios. SC, HDC, and DC each produce different proportions โ we handle that so your finished piece matches the original image.
- ๐งถSingle crochet (1.2:1), half double (1:1), double crochet (0.7:1) โ each ratio calculated
- ๐จ120+ yarn colors matched with CIEDE2000 perceptual algorithm, not simple RGB
- โจConfetti reduction removes isolated color changes that make crochet tedious
- ๐งตYarn per color: SC uses 12cm/stitch, DC uses 19cm โ we calculate with 15% waste buffer

Pet portraits, landscapes, logos, pixel art โ JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 10MB. Best results with clear subjects and good contrast.
Choose Stitch Type
SC for detail (1.2:1 ratio), HDC for speed (1:1), DC for blankets (0.7:1). Each changes grid proportions and yarn estimates.
Fine-Tune Settings
8-12 colors for blankets, 15-20 for portraits. Confetti: Heavy for tapestry crochet. Brightness/contrast sliders for dark photos.

Why Crocheters Choose ArtPatt
Built specifically for crochet colorwork โ not a cross-stitch tool with a crochet label.
Real Stitch Ratios
Most generators treat stitches as square pixels. A single crochet stitch is 20% taller than wide. DC is 30% wider than tall. We compensate the grid so your finished blanket matches the image โ not a stretched version.
Confetti Elimination
The #1 complaint from crocheters: isolated single-stitch color changes. Each means cutting yarn and weaving ends. Our majority-vote filter detects and removes them. Set to Heavy for tapestry crochet โ under 3% confetti is ideal.
Accurate Yarn Estimates
SC: ~12cm/stitch. HDC: ~15cm. DC: ~19cm. Per color including fragmentation overhead (scattered colors waste more on starts/stops) plus 15% buffer. Know exactly how many skeins to buy before starting.
120+ Yarn Colors
Full spectrum from white through black โ pastels, neons, earth tones, metallics. Click any color to swap it with searchable database. Match yarn you already own.
Dithering for Gradients
Floyd-Steinberg error diffusion creates a stippled effect simulating smooth gradients with fewer colors. In crochet this produces a heathered look similar to variegated yarn.
Professional PDF Charts
Cover: complete yarn legend (name, code, symbol, meters, skeins). Grid: 50ร50 sections with row/column numbers. Print, put on magnetic board, mark off rows as you go.
Tapestry Crochet, C2C, and Graphghan Patterns
Tapestry crochet carries multiple yarns inside the stitches, creating a thick, reversible fabric. For tapestry, use SC stitch type, 8-12 colors maximum, and Heavy confetti reduction. The carried yarns mean every isolated color change adds bulk โ our filter keeps your fabric even.
Corner-to-corner (C2C) uses DC clusters as pixels. Each C2C tile is larger than SC, so use a smaller grid (40-60 wide). Enable dithering for photos โ the stippled effect looks beautiful in C2C because adjacent tiles blend at a distance. For a standard throw (120ร160cm), you need about 200ร260 stitches at 16 SC/10cm gauge.
Graphghans are typically SC with 2-3 colors per row. The row/column numbers every 10 stitches help you keep count on long rows. Pro tip: print the B&W symbol chart and use a ruler to track your current row while referencing the color chart for yarn selection.
ArtPatt vs Other Crochet Pattern Generators
StitchFiddle: Limited free tier, no confetti reduction, no yarn estimates, treats all stitches as square. Pic2Pat: No backstitch, no dithering, no color swapping, often produces overly dark patterns. KnitPro: Primarily for knitting, no crochet stitch ratio compensation.
ArtPatt: Free unlimited generation, 4-level confetti filter, per-color yarn calculation with stitch-type-specific rates, CIEDE2000 color matching (not RGB), Floyd-Steinberg dithering, image preprocessing, and searchable 120-color database with one-click swapping.
What Crocheters Say
โThe confetti reduction alone makes this worth using over anything else. My tapestry crochet patterns look clean now โ no more random single-stitch color changes that make me want to quit.โ
Sarah M.
Tapestry crochet designer
โI was buying 30% too much yarn with other generators because they didn't account for DC using more yarn per stitch. ArtPatt's estimates were spot-on for my last C2C blanket.โ
Megan T.
C2C blanket maker
โFinally a tool that understands crochet stitches aren't square. My graphghan portrait actually looks like the person now instead of being weirdly stretched.โ
