The Crochet Pricing Formula Explained

The most common mistake when pricing crochet items is forgetting labor. Yarn cost alone is not a price — it's a floor. Labor is typically 60–80% of a fair price for handmade items, and most hobbyist makers who price from materials alone are effectively working for well under minimum wage.

The formula used here: Suggested Price = (Materials + Labor + Overhead) × (1 + Profit Margin%) ÷ (1 − Platform Fee%). The platform fee division (rather than subtraction) is critical — if you simply subtract the fee from your target price, you undercharge. Divide by (1 − fee rate) to gross up correctly.

Overhead covers things that are real costs but easy to forget: tissue paper and boxes for packaging ($0.50–2 per item), a share of your electricity and internet bill, tool amortization (crochet hooks, yarn winders, scissors depreciate over time), and labels or business cards. $1–5 per item is reasonable for most small handmade businesses.

Etsy Pricing vs. Craft Fair vs. Wholesale

Etsy charges 6.5% transaction fee + 3% Etsy Payments processing + $0.20 listing fee per item. On a $45 item that's about $4.85 in fees — nearly 11%. The calculator handles this automatically when you select Etsy. Amazon Handmade charges a flat 15% referral fee with no listing fee.

Craft fair pricing is simpler — no per-item platform fee — but you must account for booth rent separately. A $150 booth fee spread across 30 items is $5 overhead per item. Local pricing also tends to run slightly higher than Etsy because buyers value the in-person experience and you have no shipping to deal with. Wholesale price is typically 50% of retail — this is the industry standard. If a shop approaches you about stocking your work, your retail price needs to be high enough that 50% of it still covers your costs and leaves a margin.
