This is a photo-first chart workflow. The same source image can be re-generated for a different craft or technique, but the engine does not pretend that an SC tapestry chart, a C2C chart, and a filet chart follow the same construction rules.
A generic image filter can make a grid. A useful pattern also has to respect the way a stitch is worked, how colors change, what detail can survive, and what a maker needs to print and buy.
High-contrast compact marks receive extra attention during palette construction. Candidate charts are compared against the source for color error, edge contrast, and confetti so a detail improvement cannot quietly flatten the rest of the image.
DMC-based crafts are matched against 489 solid DMC floss colors in perceptual Lab space rather than naive RGB distance. Yarn workflows use craft palettes and can swap to supported yarn brands before export.
The engine applies the selected craft and stitch proportions instead of assuming every chart cell is a square. Crochet SC, HDC, and DC/C2C, knitting gauges, and counted-fabric settings affect the finished dimensions.
Confetti reduction, dithering, color caps, two-color mosaic handling, macrame binary states, and backstitch or partial-stitch detail are applied according to the technique instead of as one generic image filter.
The result is checked for a valid palette and grid, and source-aware validation can reject a suspiciously uniform chart when a meaningful subject has disappeared. If the grid is too coarse for compact marks, the generator explains what resolution to try.
Grid charts include symbols, legends, row-by-row instructions where the technique supports them, per-color material estimates, browser editing and progress tracking, plus HD PNG and printable multi-page PDF export for grid crafts.

It applies the selected stitch or fabric proportions, palette family, technique limits, and workflow rules — for example SC versus DC, C2C diagonals, filet states, or stranded knitting rows.
Perceptual color matching, edge-aware weighting, dithering, and confetti reduction are combined with a non-regression check so cleanup does not erase the subject.
The result is checked for a valid chart and suspicious detail loss, then rendered with symbols, legend, instructions, material quantities, and print-ready output.

The important design choice is that the selected technique changes the conversion. An SC graphghan, a DC C2C blanket, a filet chart, a two-color mosaic chart, a Fair Isle chart, and an intarsia chart are not interchangeable pixel grids. ArtPatt keeps these workflows explicit so the result is easier to stitch, estimate, and print.
The engine also exposes uncertainty instead of hiding it. When a source contains compact marks that cannot fit the selected resolution, the generator recommends a larger grid. When a candidate result loses a meaningful subject, source-aware validation can stop that result before it is shown as a reliable chart.
It should preserve the subject while reducing the image to colors a maker can buy, account for the physical proportions of the selected stitch, remove technique-specific noise, and show enough information to complete the project.
