Generate Mosaic Crochet
Patterns from Images
Mosaic crochet uses 1 color per row โ only 2 colors total for stunning geometric patterns. Upload a design, reduce to 2 high-contrast colors, and get a chart that's simple to crochet but looks incredibly complex.
- ๐งถOptimized for 2-color patterns โ the foundation of mosaic crochet technique
- ๐Maximum contrast preprocessing: turns any image into sharp, distinct color blocks
- โจHeavy confetti = solid color areas with clean transitions between rows
- ๐SC ratio compensation: 1.2:1 height-to-width for correct finished proportions

Mosaic-Optimized Settings
Mosaic crochet has very specific requirements โ here's how to set up ArtPatt for best results.
2 Colors, Maximum Contrast
Set color count to 2. Choose high-contrast pairs: black/white, navy/cream, charcoal/mustard. Boost contrast slider to +40 or higher in preprocessing. This forces the image into sharp, clean two-tone areas that mosaic technique requires.
Zero Confetti Required
In mosaic crochet, each row is one color only. Confetti (isolated pixels of the wrong color) would require impossible mid-row color changes. Heavy confetti + 2 colors = perfectly solid rows where every stitch is the current row's color. Confetti % should be 0%.
Grid Size for Mosaic
Mosaic works well at 40-80 stitches wide. Smaller grids (40) for coasters and small items. Larger (60-80) for blankets. Each cell represents either a worked stitch or a skipped stitch (revealing the row below's color). More stitches = more intricate geometric effects.
Row-by-Row Chart
The generated chart shows which positions have each color. For mosaic technique, you work each row in one color: stitch where your color shows, skip/chain where the other color shows through from below. Row numbers help you track progress through the alternating color sequence.
Understanding Mosaic Crochet
Mosaic crochet looks complex but is surprisingly simple: you only use one color per row. The pattern emerges because you skip stitches, allowing the previous row's color to show through. Two rows of color A, then two rows of color B, alternating โ but with strategic skips that create geometric patterns.
This means the 'pattern' isn't just a color chart โ it's a set of instructions about which stitches to work and which to skip. ArtPatt's 2-color grid serves as the visual reference: where you see Color A, work a stitch in Color A rows and skip in Color B rows (and vice versa). The heavy confetti filter ensures clean, solid areas.
Best images for mosaic: geometric shapes (diamonds, chevrons, zigzags, stars), bold silhouettes, tribal/Aztec-inspired designs, simple mandalas, and repeating tile patterns. Avoid anything with gradients, curves that need anti-aliasing, or more than 2 clearly distinct zones. The simpler and more geometric, the better the mosaic will look.
Mosaic Crochet Project Ideas
Throw blanket (60-80 stitches wide): Classic geometric pattern in 2 colors. Works up quickly because you only change colors every 2 rows. At 16 SC per 10cm, 80 stitches = 50cm wide. Work to desired length. Total yarn: ~400-600m per color for a lap blanket.
Coaster set (20ร20 stitches): Perfect beginner mosaic project. Simple diamond or star pattern. Takes 30-45 minutes per coaster. Use cotton cord for heat resistance. Makes great gifts.
Wall hanging (40ร60 stitches): Mounted on a dowel rod. Geometric mandala or southwestern pattern. Add fringe at bottom for extra length. Frame with a simple wood rod at top and bottom.
