Estimate Yarn for a Crochet Chart or Graphghan

Use stitch count, stitch type, and skein size to estimate how much yarn a chart-based crochet project will need before you start buying colors.

Crochet Yarn Calculator

Estimate yarn for photo-based crochet charts by stitch count, stitch type, buffer, and skein length.

Formula: yarn = stitch count × stitch type rate × buffer

This is best for charted colorwork and graph-style projects. Real usage also depends on tension, hook size, and how often colors start and stop.

Why Crochet Yarn Estimates Can Go Wrong

Crochet stitch type changes yarn usage more than many makers expect. A chart that seems manageable in single crochet can consume much more yarn when worked in taller stitches.

This calculator is especially useful for graphghans, tapestry crochet, and photo-based projects where the stitch count is known from the chart. Once you know the total stitch load, the yarn estimate becomes much easier to trust.

It also helps with color budgeting. Even if you still need per-color estimates later, knowing the total yarn demand helps you decide if the project is realistic before you generate or buy anything.

Worked example: a 150×200-stitch single crochet chart at worsted weight (180m per 100g skein) works out to roughly 150 × 200 × 12cm/stitch = 3,600m of yarn, or 20 skeins before rounding up for waste. Switch the same chart to half-double crochet and consumption rises to about 5,400m — 30 skeins — because HDC uses roughly 1.5× the yarn of SC per stitch.

When to Use This Calculator

Use it after you know the chart size or total stitch count. If you are still deciding between crochet and another craft, it can help you compare material commitment before generating the full pattern.

For large blankets or graphghans, round up aggressively. Dye-lot changes and color discontinuations are more frustrating than having an extra skein left over at the end.
