How Charm Pack Math Works
A charm square is 5" × 5". Sewn with ¼" seams, each finishes at 4½". Divide the width you want by 4½ for squares across, the length by 4½ for squares down, and multiply. A standard charm pack holds 42 squares.
Layer cakes are 10" squares (9½" finished), and mini charms are 2½" (2" finished). The same math works for all of them — the calculator rounds to the nearest whole square and shows the size you actually get.
The leftover squares from the last pack are handy for a scrappy binding, a label, or a pillow to match.
Stretching Fewer Packs
Alternate charm squares with plain 5" squares cut from yardage to halve the packs you need, or add a wide border: a 6" border on a baby quilt saves more than a whole charm pack.
