Why Knitted Items Are Expensive — and Should Be

Handknitting is one of the most labor-intensive crafts. A simple adult sweater takes 40–80 hours. A baby cardigan in fingering weight can take 12–20 hours. A pair of socks: 6–10 hours. At even a modest $12/hr, an adult sweater accumulates $480–960 in labor alone — before yarn. This is not a mistake in the pricing calculator. It is why quality handknits retail for $200–600 and why many knitters cannot compete with machine-made prices at all.

The correct approach is not to lower your labor value to match mass-market prices. It is to price correctly and find buyers who understand the value of handknitting. They exist — on Etsy, at premium craft markets, and in the gifting market where a handknit garment carries emotional and artisanal value no factory can replicate.

Use the same formula as any other handmade craft: Price = (Yarn + Labor + Overhead) × (1 + Profit Margin%) ÷ (1 − Platform Fee%). The calculator handles all four components and automatically applies Etsy, Amazon Handmade, or craft fair fee structures.

Knitting Price Ranges: What to Expect

Baby blanket (knitting): 8–15 hours in DK or worsted weight, $15–30 in yarn. At $15/hr + 20% margin + Etsy fees: $170–280. Many knitters charge $120–180, which means they're earning $5–8/hr effectively. Use the calculator to see where your pricing lands.

Baby cardigan: 12–20 hours, $10–20 in yarn. At $15/hr: $220–340 suggested retail. Cardigans in fingering weight with fine stitch detail command more — $280–400 for quality work is not unusual in the premium handmade market. Adult cardigan: 50–80 hours, $40–120 in yarn. At $15/hr: $850–1,300 minimum. This is correct. Premium handknit cardigans from established makers sell for $600–1,200 on Etsy and at specialty markets.
