How to draw the Rick Roll QR code by hand

Draw a 29 × 29 square on graph paper — the 25 × 25 code plus a border of 2 empty squares on every side. Start with the three big corner squares (7 × 7 each, a ring with a 3 × 3 block in the middle): scanners find the code by those, so they have to be exact. Then fill the rest row by row from the written rows under the preview, ticking each row off as you go.

Use a black marker on white paper and fill each square completely; a light pencil shade or a half-filled square reads as white. The code uses error correction level L, which can absorb about 7% damage, so one or two wrong squares in the middle usually still scan — a wrong square in a corner finder usually does not.

Scan it before you show anyone. Hold the phone 20–30 cm away with the whole code and its white border in view. If it does not open, compare your drawing with the PNG one row at a time; 320 squares is a lot to count, and a skipped square shifts everything after it in that row.

Never Gonna Give You Up QR code as pixel art, beads and stitches

In Minecraft, one block is one square: black concrete or wool for the dark squares, white for the light ones and the border, 841 blocks in total. Build it flat on the ground or as a wall and scan the screen from a straight-on view; shadows and fog on the far side can stop a scan.

Switch the tool to Perler beads and the same code fits one large 29 × 29 pegboard; cross stitch on 14-count Aida finishes at about 5.3 cm (2.1 in). For yarn, the knitting and crochet modes keep the squares square on fabric — see the knitted QR code and crochet QR code pages for the yarn-specific settings.
